Everyone Talks About Emotional Well-being

Everyone talks about emotional well-being, but issues around emotional well-being continue to affect people. So, what is it exactly? Briefly, it is characterized as the emotional quality that a person experiences including managing emotions which can be affected by various factors such as demographics, socio-economic status, and situational factors. Emotional well-being is really about how you feel and manage your emotions along with having a positive outlook, coping effectively with life's challenges, and building strong relationships.

Unfortunately, it is overlooked and in contrast to physical health, it is often ignored, even though emotional and mental health are just as critical to our general physical health. More importantly, our mental health condition can affect our physical health positively or negatively. However, unlike physical health, emotions are more difficult for someone observing from the outside. When our physical health needs evaluating, you can get blood tests to check things like cholesterol or a cardiologist can give you a stress test to measure how your heart is functioning. This is in contrast to emotional health which is mostly self-reported by an individual and less objective than medical tests.

Having good emotional health isn’t simply the absence of experiencing negative emotional issues, just as the mere absence of disease does not define good physical well-being. But there are some ways to evaluate emotional wellness which include:

  • What is the positive state of your emotions? Someone who experiences good emotional well-being, generally feels positive emotions, like joy, excitement, and gratitude. But there is a caveat; just because someone has positive emotional well-being doesn’t mean they will not feel negative emotions, such as disappointment, sadness, and anger.

  • How is your life satisfaction? The American Psychological Association defines life satisfaction as “the extent to which a person finds life rich, meaningful, full, or of high quality.” Life satisfaction is a subjective evaluation of how content and fulfilled you are with your life overall. People often measure life satisfaction based on factors such as:

    • Personal relationships: Family, friends, romantic partners

    • Career and work life: Job satisfaction, career goals

    • Health and well-being: Physical and mental health

    • Personal growth: Learning, hobbies, interests

    • Financial situation: Income, security

    • Life experiences: Travel, adventures, achievements

  • Do you feel a sense of meaning and purpose? People who have positive emotional well-being have a strong sense of purpose, and a motivation for living, and will feel they have something to contribute to the world. A sense of meaning and purpose is something we create for ourselves. It's a personal journey that involves self-reflection, exploration, and connection. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Your sense of meaning and purpose can evolve. It's important to explore different avenues and find what resonates with you. Here are some common sources of meaning and purpose:\

    • Personal Values and Goals

      • Aligned actions: Living by your core values can provide a strong sense of purpose.

      • Goal setting: Having clear objectives and working towards them can give life direction.

    • Relationships

      • Connection with others: Strong bonds with family, friends, or romantic partners can be deeply fulfilling.

      • Giving back: Helping others can create a sense of purpose and satisfaction.

    • Interests and Passions

      • Creative outlets: Pursuing hobbies or artistic endeavors can be meaningful.

      • Learning and growth: Engaging in intellectual pursuits can stimulate the mind and soul.

    • Spirituality or Philosophy

      • Belief systems: Many people find meaning in their faith or spiritual practices.

      • Philosophical exploration: Questioning life's big questions can lead to personal insights.

    • Experiences and Challenges

      • Overcoming adversity: Resilience can foster a strong sense of purpose.

      • Appreciating life: Experiencing joy and gratitude can enrich one's life.

  • How is your ability to pursue your defined goals? People who experience positive emotional well-being aren’t hindered by negative emotions that can hold them back from pursuing their goals. Whereas someone who experiences negative emotional well-being could experience a lack feeling motivation or might be incapacitated by fear which makes them unable to pursue what they desire. Pursuing self-defined goals is a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. Everyone’s journey is unique. There's no right or wrong way to pursue your goals. The most important thing is to stay true to yourself and enjoy the journey. Here are some ideas to help you navigate that journey:

    • Self-Reflection and Goal Setting

      • Identify your passions: What truly excites and motivates you?

      • Define your values: What principles guide your life?

      • Set SMART goals: Ensure your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

      • Visualize success: Imagine yourself achieving your goals.

    • Create a Plan

      • Break down goals: Divide larger goals into smaller, manageable steps.

      • Set deadlines: Establish a timeline for each step.

      • Identify resources: Determine what you need to succeed (time, money, skills, support).

    • Build a Support System

      • Share your goals: Discuss your aspirations with friends, family, or a mentor.

      • Find accountability partners: Collaborate with others who share similar goals.

      • Seek professional help: Consider coaching or therapy if needed.

      • Reward yourself: Celebrate milestones with something you enjoy.

      • Re-evaluate goals: As you grow, your goals may change. Adapt accordingly.

  • How do you regulate yourself emotionally? The ability to positively cope with emotions is fundamental to finding emotional balance. Your goal is not to get rid of uncomfortable or distressing emotions. Your goal is to find healthy ways to manage your emotions. Emotional regulation is the ability to identify, understand, and manage your emotions effectively. Effective emotional regulation helps you build stronger relationships, improve your mental health, and make better decisions. It's about finding healthy ways to express your feelings and cope with stress. This can include:

    • Recognizing your emotions: Being aware of what you're feeling.

    • Understanding the cause: Figuring out what triggered the emotion.

    • Managing the intensity: Finding ways to calm down or intensify emotions as needed.

    • Expressing emotions appropriately: Healthily communicating feelings.

Remember that the small steps you take can lead to significant improvements in emotional well-being. You must stay patient with yourself and celebrate your progress as well as accept, evaluate, and change your shortcomings.
