Societal Issues

There is something called Societal Collapse which is the fall of a complex human society, and some of the causes include climate change, natural catastrophes, and pandemics. Sound familiar?

Unlike previous pandemics, American people generated a massive increase in gun purchases during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a Washington Post article, through the first five months of 2021, gunfire killed more than 8,100 people in the United States, with about 54 lives lost per day. A recent study by Pew Research found that one-quarter (26%) of the responses related to how our government, political culture, or society, in general, has seemingly degraded throughout the pandemic. Pew also found that around the world, most people believe their society is now more divided than before the pandemic.

As a species, we humans are not reckless, and we know what needs to be done, and although people report a decline of trust in the government and each other they still have thoughts about what’s gone wrong and how to fix it. The collapse of human civilization is not unavoidable although human history suggests it is likely. The only question is can we avoid it because we can learn from the ruins of past societies that have collapsed.
